A tragic incident involving a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft has left families in mourning after the plane crashed in Ondo State on October 5, 2026. The aircraft, an ATR-42 with registration number NAF 931, was transporting six civilians, including a couple, Joy and Sunday Micheal, who were en route to Lagos for their wedding introduction rites. Instead of celebrating their union, their families are now grappling with the devastating loss of both individuals.

Joy and Sunday had been living together without formalising their relationship, and their families were eagerly anticipating their wedding plans. However, the crash has overshadowed those hopes, with Sunday’s sister, Damilola, expressing the family's urgent desire to recover their remains for a proper burial. "The only thing we are after now is to reclaim the bodies of my brother and his wife," she stated, highlighting the family's grief and the emotional toll on their mother, who is struggling to cope with the loss.

The aircraft crashed near Igbokoda, in the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, shortly after takeoff from Benin, Edo State. It was reported that the crash occurred around 9 am while the plane was on a routine flight to Lagos. The NAF confirmed that all 25 individuals on board, including five crew members, perished in the incident.

Among the other victims were Godstmine Tarabina, a young man from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, and Ukeme David, a recent graduate who was returning to Lagos after completing his clearance for the National Youth Service Corps. David’s uncle, Hamilton Meko, lamented the loss of a promising future, stating that the family was devastated by the sudden tragedy.

The families of the victims are now left with unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding the crash. Perfection, Godstmine's sister, expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the NAF regarding recovery operations and updates on the situation. "We have yet to receive any update from the Nigerian Air Force or the government on the progress of the search-and-rescue operation," she said.

The crash has also impacted the families of military personnel aboard the aircraft. Among the deceased was Flying Officer IM Adeshina, who had only recently been commissioned into the Air Force. Tributes have circulated online, highlighting the potential cut short by this tragedy. Squadron Leader Ahamefule Aham Man-Ugwueje, the aircraft’s co-pilot, was also among the victims, having celebrated his wedding just weeks prior.

Recovery efforts are ongoing at the crash site, with local fishermen discovering personal belongings and aircraft parts in the swamp. Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa confirmed that human remains and personal items have been retrieved, although divers continue to search for the main fuselage. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, visited the site to oversee the recovery operations and ensure accountability in the investigation.

The NAF has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the crash, examining the aircraft’s maintenance history and operational procedures. Questions have arisen regarding the aircraft's airworthiness, particularly after reports indicated that it had recently returned from an extended maintenance period in Germany. The investigation aims to uncover any potential negligence or safety violations that may have contributed to the disaster.

As families await the return of their loved ones, the community is left to mourn the loss of lives that were full of promise and potential, now tragically cut short by this catastrophic event.
