The UK government has established new salary thresholds for foreign nationals applying for the Health and Care Worker visa, with the standard minimum salary set at £31,300 (approximately ₦65.3 million) annually. This requirement will come into effect in 2026, according to guidance released by the government.

For those whose occupations are listed on the immigration salary list, a lower threshold of £25,000 (about ₦52.2 million) per year will apply. This adjustment aims to facilitate the entry of skilled workers into the UK healthcare sector while ensuring that salaries remain competitive.

The government has also introduced provisions for specific groups of applicants who may qualify for reduced salary rates. Young applicants, recent graduates, and individuals holding a PhD in a STEM field may be eligible for discounted salary rates under certain conditions. For instance, applicants under the age of 26 can qualify for 70% of the lower going rate for their job, provided their salary meets the minimum of £25,000.

Additionally, those currently studying in the UK or who have recently graduated may also benefit from these reduced rates, as long as they are pursuing qualifications in a UK-regulated profession or working towards full registration in their sponsored roles. However, it is important to note that jobs listed on the immigration salary list do not qualify for these discounted rates.

The UK government has emphasized that applicants who fall under the reduced-salary categories cannot remain in the UK for more than four years in total, which includes any time spent on a Tier 2 (General) work visa.

In a related development, the UK has previously announced the minimum salary requirement for the Senior or Specialist Worker visa, which stands at £52,500 (approximately ₦109.7 million) or the going rate for the specific occupation, whichever is higher. Each occupation code has its own defined going rate, which applicants must verify against the government’s going rates table before applying.

These changes reflect the UK’s ongoing efforts to attract skilled workers to its healthcare system, particularly as the demand for healthcare professionals continues to rise. The updated salary requirements are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of foreign healthcare workers in the UK.
