Former ASUU Chairman Ndubuisi Idenyi Passes Away After Throat Cancer Battle
The Igboesa General Assembly mourns the loss of Professor Ndubuisi Idenyi, a distinguished academic.

Professor Ndubuisi Idenyi, a prominent figure in Nigeria's academic community and former Vice Chancellor of the First African Distance Learning University (FADLU), has died after a prolonged battle with throat cancer. His passing on October 3, 2026, has left a significant void, prompting tributes from various quarters, including the Igboesa General Assembly.
In a condolence message released on October 6, the assembly expressed deep sorrow over Idenyi's death, describing him as a rare gem and a man of peace. The statement, signed by President General Tony Edeh and Secretary General Joel Ebenyi, highlighted Idenyi's contributions to his community, noting his pride in his Nkalaha heritage and his dignified representation of the Igboesa clan.
Idenyi's academic career was marked by excellence, with over 80 publications in international journals covering diverse topics such as ceramics, polymers, and corrosion monitoring. His influence extended beyond research, as he served on the Academic Board of Mechanical Engineering at Ebonyi State University, where he was also the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Community stakeholder Ojiabor Igboesa paid tribute to Idenyi, emphasizing the profound sense of loss felt across the Igboesa clan. However, he also raised concerns regarding Idenyi's medical treatment and the overall state of healthcare in Nigeria. Ojiabor criticized the lack of adequate medical facilities in Ebonyi State, pointing out that despite the construction of numerous flyovers, the region lacks a single functional general hospital outside the Federal Teaching Hospital.
He lamented, "What comfort is a flyover to a dying man who cannot access good medical care?" This statement reflects broader frustrations regarding healthcare priorities in the state and nation.
Ojiabor also alleged that Idenyi faced challenges during his tenure at Ebonyi State University, claiming he was suspended without pay in 2016 alongside other union leaders due to disputes over unpaid promotions and salary reductions. He mentioned that an Industrial Court of Arbitration had ordered the payment of withheld salaries and compensation, but these directives were reportedly ignored until 2025, when Governor Francis Nwifuru lifted Idenyi's suspension.
Despite the controversies surrounding his career, Idenyi is remembered for his academic brilliance and mentorship. Ojiabor described him as a "gentle soul" and a "beacon of humility and brilliance," underscoring the impact he had on his students and colleagues alike. The Igboesa General Assembly concluded their tribute with a prayer for Idenyi's soul, expressing hope for his eternal rest.
As the community reflects on Idenyi's legacy, his contributions to education and research will undoubtedly resonate for years to come, marking him as a distinguished scholar and a beloved figure in the academic landscape of Nigeria.
