In a significant move aimed at enhancing the welfare of educators, the Kebbi State Government has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 for over 17,620 teachers across the state. This decision follows the endorsement of a White Paper by Governor Nasir Idris, which was developed by a committee tasked with auditing the teaching workforce and reviewing existing salary structures.

The announcement was made by Abubakar Zaki, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), who confirmed that the new wage will take effect from October 2026. This salary review is part of a broader governmental effort to address the pay disparities among teachers in Kebbi State, reflecting a commitment to improving educational standards.

The governor's approval of the committee's findings marks an important step in formalizing the new wage structure, which aims to better align teacher salaries with current economic realities. The initiative is seen as a response to the ongoing national dialogue regarding minimum wage adjustments and the need to value the teaching profession more highly.

In addition to the salary increase, the Kebbi State Government is also focusing on enhancing educational infrastructure. The administration has announced plans to rehabilitate 2,650 schools and construct 200 new educational facilities across the state. This investment in physical learning environments is aimed at creating better conditions for both teachers and students.

Zaki praised the government's initiative, viewing the combined efforts on salary and infrastructure as a pivotal advancement for the education sector. He urged teachers to reciprocate this gesture by demonstrating increased professionalism and dedication in their roles.

Kebbi State's decision aligns with similar moves by other states in Nigeria, where there is a growing recognition of the need to improve teacher remuneration and working conditions. The government's proactive approach is expected to not only uplift the morale of educators but also enhance the overall quality of education in the state, benefiting countless students in the long run.
