Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called on President Bola Tinubu to raise the minimum wage for workers in Nigeria. His appeal comes in support of organized labor's demands for a significant wage increase as workers grapple with the harsh realities of a struggling economy.

In a statement released by Phrank Shaibu, the Director of Strategic Communications for the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku criticized the current administration for what he described as a "ruthless economic squeeze." He accused Tinubu of allowing a situation where workers receive higher wages on paper but are left with diminished purchasing power, struggling to afford basic necessities.

Atiku's remarks highlight the frustrations of many Nigerians who have seen their earnings eroded by inflation and rising costs. He pointed out that the government's claims of economic reform have become increasingly disconnected from the daily struggles faced by citizens. "The government pulled away the floor, offered workers a flimsy umbrella and now applauds itself while the rain beats down on them," he stated.

The former Vice President specifically criticized the removal of the petrol subsidy, which he argues has led to skyrocketing prices of essential goods and services without adequate support for families. He noted that at the current fuel price of N1,400 per litre, the monthly minimum wage of N70,000 only allows workers to purchase about 50 litres of petrol, raising serious concerns about how they can afford food, rent, and transportation.

Atiku's statements come at a time when many Nigerians are feeling the pinch of a cost-of-living crisis exacerbated by recent economic policies. He emphasized that the burden of these challenges has disproportionately fallen on the most vulnerable members of society, stating, "Those with the least have been made to carry the heaviest load.
