Hollywood icon Sylvester Stallone has opened up about his traumatic childhood, revealing experiences of violence and emotional neglect in a recent interview with The New York Times. Stallone, who is known for his roles in blockbuster films like Rocky and Rambo, shared that he intentionally left out some of the darker moments from his upcoming memoir, The Steps, as he did not want to elicit pity from readers.

Stallone's childhood was marred by his parents' divorce, after which he lived with his father in Maryland. He described his father as volatile and physically abusive, recounting a particularly harrowing incident. "The next thing you know - wham! He had very big hands. You just learned to duck a little bit," Stallone recalled. He detailed how, after returning home from a store with the wrong type of bread, his father reacted violently, kicking him in the stomach and leaving him lying in the street.

Years later, Stallone confronted his father about their troubled relationship. He expressed a desire to switch places with his father for just three minutes, stating, "Because I'd like to give you some of your own medicine, and you would know what it'd be like to have your ass kicked." This confrontation revealed the deep-seated anger and unresolved issues stemming from his childhood.

Stallone also reflected on the emotional distance from his mother, stating, "My mother never - and my brother will attest - hugged me. Ever, ever." He noted that his father showed little affection, except for a rare moment when he was around nine years old, which Stallone described as a significant memory that stayed with him.

The actor shared that he spent much of his early life in a boarding house, where his parents visited only once a month. He explained, "I just was raised by strangers, you know, in a boarding house. And it became sort of a natural environment. And my parents were really never nurturing, so this was actually a bonus compared to where I was living."

Reflecting on how these experiences shaped him, Stallone admitted that the emotional deprivation made him tough, but not in a positive way. He acknowledged that he did not experience true love until much later in life, around the age of 70, with his wife Jennifer Flavin and their children. "And that's a big pity. It really is," he lamented.

Despite the challenges of his early years, Stallone has built a remarkable career in Hollywood, winning three Academy Awards for Rocky and creating the iconic Rambo franchise. He is also a father of five, with two sons from his first marriage and three daughters with Flavin, whom he married in 1997.
