LAUTECH union calls on Oyo government to implement 2025 agreement for staff welfare
ASUU LAUTECH urges immediate action from Oyo state government on 2025 agreement.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has urged the Oyo State government to take swift action in implementing the 2025 Federal Government and ASUU agreement. This call follows a statement issued by the union, highlighting the pressing need for the full execution of the agreement, which was finalized in December 2025 after extensive negotiations.
According to ASUU LAUTECH, the provisions of the agreement, which require local implementation, have already been processed and approved by the university’s Governing Council. The union emphasized that the critical issue at hand is not the existence of the agreement but rather the urgent need for its complete implementation, which has significant financial and institutional implications.
The union has made numerous attempts to engage the state government in discussions regarding the agreement's implementation and the payment of outstanding entitlements owed to staff members. They expressed disappointment that it took public pressure and threats of industrial action from another tertiary institution in the state for the government to address the matter adequately.
ASUU LAUTECH stated, "The financial implications of implementing the agreement had already been submitted after being requested by the state government." They argued that the current situation cannot be attributed to a lack of information regarding these financial implications. Instead, they called for a clear decision, sufficient funding, and the immediate commencement of full implementation without further delays.
The union highlighted that LAUTECH has garnered national recognition, being named the Best State University and the Best University of Technology in Nigeria. They stressed that maintaining the institution’s standards in teaching, research, accreditation, and technological development relies heavily on adequate and predictable funding.
The ongoing dispute over the 2025 agreement is part of a broader issue concerning unpaid staff entitlements, including outstanding academic allowances and promotion arrears that date back several years. ASUU LAUTECH underscored that these are not mere gifts but entitlements owed to staff for work already performed.
In light of the potential for industrial action, the union clarified that they do not wish to resort to strikes. They reiterated their commitment to dialogue and negotiation as the preferred methods for resolving disputes. However, they stressed that dialogue must yield tangible results, stating, "Repeated appeals without implementation cannot constitute a permanent industrial-relations strategy."
ASUU LAUTECH has appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to intervene personally in the matter, asserting that an urgent resolution is necessary to avoid disruptions to academic activities. The union's message is clear: they seek dialogue, not confrontation; implementation, not promises; sustainable funding, not temporary relief; and ultimately, industrial harmony without the need for industrial action.
