A 50-year-old murder suspect, Bethlehem Nwanlia, tragically slumped and died on Tuesday at the Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa. Nwanlia was awaiting judgment in a high-profile case involving conspiracy, kidnapping, and the alleged murder of three individuals from the Kalaba community.

Nwanlia was on trial alongside two other suspects, 32-year-old Gideon Atama and Clever Ovo, for their alleged roles in the murders of Odeinyefa Ogbolosingha, who was related to Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri, as well as Paramount Ruler Kolibo Francis Amabelimo and Samuel Oburo. The three victims were reportedly killed in Yenagoa Local Government Area, a case that has garnered significant public attention.

The suspects were apprehended in 2022 by the Police Operation Puff Adder, now known as the Violent Crime Response Unit, under the leadership of CSP Chris Nwaogbo. Nwanlia had been experiencing health issues, including hypertension and stroke, while in custody at the Okaka Medium Correctional Centre in Yenagoa.

The incident occurred shortly after the court adjourned the judgment in the case to October 27, 2026, due to the absence of the presiding judge, Justice Amadise Ekadi. Witnesses reported that Nwanlia suddenly clutched his chest and collapsed in Court 11, prompting immediate concern from those present.

A court registry official recounted the moment, stating, "Immediately the adjournment was announced, one of the suspects clutched his chest, slumped and died." Despite the swift response from correctional officers, police personnel, and lawyers, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Medical personnel were called to the scene to assess Nwanlia's condition, and he was later taken to a hospital for further examination, where he was pronounced dead. The sudden turn of events left many in the courtroom stunned, highlighting the serious health challenges faced by individuals in custody, especially those involved in high-stakes legal battles.

This incident raises concerns about the health and welfare of inmates awaiting trial, as well as the conditions within correctional facilities in the region. As the legal proceedings continue, the implications of Nwanlia's death may resonate beyond the courtroom, prompting discussions on the treatment of suspects in custody and the need for adequate medical care.
