A teacher from Ikorodu, Lagos, has shared a deeply moving story about a secondary school student whose life took a tragic turn after a simple refusal to accompany her father to an ATM. The incident, which occurred in 2021, highlights the unforeseen consequences of everyday decisions and the fragility of life.

The teacher, who was responsible for teaching the girl in Junior Secondary School 3, noted that she had been struggling academically, unable to read a textbook meant for her grade. Concerned about her progress, the teacher sought permission from his superior to provide private lessons at the student’s home, charging a fee of ₦15,000 for two sessions each week.

During one of these lessons, the father asked his daughter to join him for a trip to the ATM, hoping to teach her how to operate the machine. However, the girl declined, citing hunger and a headache as reasons for her refusal. Despite the teacher's encouragement and even offering her ₦200 to buy something to eat, she remained resolute in her decision not to go.

Tragically, the following Thursday, the teacher noticed the girl was absent from school and decided to visit her home. It was there that he learned the heartbreaking news: the girl's father had died the night before after going to the ATM alone. This shocking revelation left the teacher in profound sorrow, particularly as he recalled the girl's refusal to accompany her father that fateful evening.

In the aftermath of the father's death, the family faced further challenges. The widow revealed that ₦450,000, which was intended as her husband's business capital, was left in his bank account. However, the man’s younger brother took control of the ATM card and allegedly provided the widow with only ₦20,000, claiming the rest was needed for burial expenses. Within two weeks, the uncle reportedly sold the family home and forced the widow and her daughter into a cramped living situation in a small room at the back of the property.

The teacher expressed that the entire experience remains a painful memory, particularly as it serves as a stark reminder of how quickly life can change. The decision of a young girl to stay home instead of learning a vital skill ultimately led to a series of unfortunate events that shattered a family.

This incident underscores the importance of family support and communication, as well as the need for young people to be equipped with essential life skills. As the teacher continues to reflect on this tragedy, he hopes that others can learn from this heartbreaking story.
