Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has formally presented the Certificate of Recognition and Staff of Office to King Charles Douglas Mac-Pepple Jaja VI, the newly installed Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom. The ceremony took place at Government House in Port Harcourt, where the governor emphasized the importance of unity and inclusiveness within the kingdom.

During the presentation, Fubara congratulated Jaja VI on overcoming the challenges associated with the selection and coronation process. He urged the new monarch to view those who were not selected as allies rather than adversaries, highlighting the need for collective progress in Opobo.

Fubara, who hails from Opobo, expressed pride in the peaceful transition of leadership, noting that the late King Dandeson Douglas Jaja's throne had been embroiled in legal disputes for over 27 years. He stated that his administration played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth selection process, thus avoiding further court battles.

The governor also addressed his absence at the coronation on September 26, explaining that he was on national duty but remained spiritually connected to the event. He reassured attendees that his government was actively involved in all logistical aspects of the coronation, countering any political insinuations regarding his absence.

Fubara stressed that the true measure of a king lies in their ability to manage success. He called on Jaja VI to focus on enhancing education, healthcare, and small businesses as strategies to combat youth criminality in the region. He reiterated the importance of maintaining security and urged the new king not to compromise on safety for the sake of kinship.

In his acceptance speech, King Jaja VI pledged to lead Opobo Kingdom with a commitment to service, inclusion, and vision, honoring the legacy of the kingdom's founder, King Jaja, who established the area through trade and diplomacy 156 years ago. He described the Staff of Office as a sacred trust, promising to lead with justice, peace, and dignity.

The new monarch expressed gratitude to various stakeholders, including the Rivers State Government, the Opobo Council of Alapu, and the community members who supported his ascension to the throne. He assured the government of Opobo’s dedication to being a reliable partner in fostering peace and development in the state.

The coronation ceremony was attended by notable figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan and other dignitaries, underscoring the significance of this event in the history of Opobo Kingdom.
