Canada's immigration authority has released an updated list of Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) that offer programs qualifying for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This initiative is particularly significant for international students, including many from Nigeria and other African nations, who aspire to study in Canada and potentially work in the country after graduation.

The PGWP is a vital pathway that allows eligible international graduates to work in Canada for up to three years following the completion of a full-time program at a recognized institution. This makes it one of the most attractive immigration options for students looking to gain international experience and establish their careers abroad.

The updated list encompasses all 13 provinces and territories in Canada, providing prospective students with a comprehensive resource to identify where they can pursue studies that meet PGWP criteria. The provinces included are:

  • Alberta
  • British Columbia
  • Manitoba
  • New Brunswick
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Northwest Territories
  • Nova Scotia
  • Nunavut
  • Ontario
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Quebec
  • Saskatchewan
  • Yukon

However, it is crucial for students to note that not every program offered at these institutions qualifies for the PGWP. The Canadian government emphasizes the importance of verifying the eligibility of specific programs before enrolling. This is a critical step for international students who are planning their studies with the intention of securing work in Canada post-graduation. Enrolling in a program that does not meet PGWP requirements could leave graduates ineligible for the permit, regardless of the institution's inclusion on the DLI list.

Prospective students can utilize the official portal provided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to filter and search for PGWP-eligible programs by province or territory. This feature allows students to make informed decisions about their educational paths and future work opportunities in Canada.

In addition to the PGWP updates, Canada has also announced 11 permanent residence pathways for foreign nationals, which include options for skilled workers, caregivers, and family members, as well as dedicated routes for refugees and individuals who were previously in state care. This broadens the scope for international students and workers looking to settle in Canada after their studies or work experience.

As international students increasingly consider Canada for higher education, the updated DLI list serves as a crucial tool in navigating their academic and professional futures.
