Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has made a remarkable entry into the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2027, securing the title of Nigeria’s highest-ranked state-owned university. The rankings, published on September 30, show UNIOSUN achieving a joint eighth position nationally, placing it within the global band of 1,201–1,400.

The announcement was made by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, who highlighted that UNIOSUN stands alongside Babcock University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in this global category. This year’s rankings evaluated a total of 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, with a notable 29 Nigerian universities making the list, marking Nigeria as the most represented nation in sub-Saharan Africa.

UNIOSUN's performance was particularly commendable in the Research Environment category, where it achieved a score of 25.6, the second-highest among the ranked Nigerian universities, trailing only Covenant University, which scored 32.5. In the Teaching category, UNIOSUN recorded a score of 23.6, placing it fifth nationally, while its Research Quality score was 43.8. The university also scored 17.6 in Industry and 40.3 in International Outlook.

The Times Higher Education rankings are based on five key pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry. The methodology for the 2027 rankings includes 18 performance indicators that assess various factors such as teaching reputation, research productivity, citations, international collaboration, and industry income.

Despite being a newer institution, UNIOSUN's debut in the rankings is particularly significant as it outperformed 19 older and larger Nigerian universities. Among the 29 Nigerian institutions listed, only seven are state-owned, compared to 19 federal and three private universities.

The university's strong showing in Research Environment is especially noteworthy, given that the national mean score in this category is 13.9. UNIOSUN's score of 25.6 clearly demonstrates its commitment to enhancing research capabilities. Similarly, its Teaching score surpasses the national mean of 20.6, reinforcing its position as one of the top educational institutions in Nigeria.

In light of this achievement, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, expressed gratitude towards the Osun State Government and other stakeholders for their unwavering support. He emphasized the university's dedication to building on this success by pursuing initiatives that will further enhance its academic and research profile, ultimately aiming for greater global recognition.

The 2027 Times Higher Education ranking is described as a significant milestone for UNIOSUN, providing an external benchmark for its performance in teaching, research, international outlook, and industry engagement. With its debut ranking, UNIOSUN is poised to continue its trajectory of growth and excellence in higher education.
