The story of how Enoch Adejare Adeboye ascended to the position of General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is a remarkable chapter in Nigeria's religious history, characterized by divine prophecy and unexpected leadership transitions.

Reverend Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, the founder of RCCG, established the church in 1952 after breaking away from the Cherubim and Seraphim movement. His vision for RCCG was rooted in a divine covenant that promised the church would expand globally, provided its members remained faithful. At the time of Akindayomi's passing in 1980, RCCG had fewer than 40 parishes, primarily located in southwestern Nigeria, and was relatively unknown beyond its borders.

Years before his death, Akindayomi reportedly shared a prophecy regarding his successor. He indicated that the individual chosen by God would be young, educated, and not yet a member of the church. This prediction was particularly striking given that the church's leadership consisted mostly of older ministers who had dedicated many years to the ministry.

Enoch Adeboye, a mathematics lecturer, joined RCCG in 1973, unaware that he was to become a pivotal figure in its history. His academic background and lack of prior church leadership ambitions made his selection as a successor unexpected for many. However, Akindayomi quickly recognized Adeboye as the individual he had envisioned years earlier. Adeboye's role as an interpreter for Akindayomi, translating sermons from Yoruba to English, brought him closer to the church's founder and allowed him to gain insight into the church's operations.

By 1975, just two years after joining RCCG, Adeboye was ordained as a pastor. During this time, Akindayomi took it upon himself to mentor Adeboye, preparing him for future leadership. Despite the founder's confidence in Adeboye, many church members were skeptical about a relatively young man leading the church, given the longstanding traditions of older leadership.

As Akindayomi's health deteriorated, he summoned Adeboye for a crucial meeting where they discussed the church's founding covenant and its future. During this private session, Akindayomi reportedly expressed his belief that Adeboye was destined to lead RCCG. Adeboye himself had begun to receive revelations about his future role, though he found the prospect daunting.

Following Akindayomi's death in 1980, Adeboye was appointed as General Overseer in 1981, a decision that sparked controversy among church members. Many were concerned about the implications of having a young leader with limited experience. Nevertheless, under Adeboye's leadership, RCCG has grown exponentially, now boasting over 50,000 parishes across 197 countries worldwide.
