Tragic desert hike claims life of Cassius Newton, son of ex-Chelsea player
Cassius Newton, 34, tragically lost his life during a hike in extreme heat.

Cassius Newton, the son of former Chelsea midfielder Eddie Newton, has died during a desert hike in the United Arab Emirates, an inquest revealed. The unfortunate incident occurred on July 18, when Newton, aged 34, and his friend, Aran Martinson, set out on a hike in the mountainous Wadi Naqab region despite warnings about the extreme heat.
According to reports, Newton had spoken with his wife around 2:00 AM to inform her of their hiking plans. Concerned for their safety, she urged him not to go due to the soaring temperatures, which can reach up to 40°C in the area. Michelle Brown, the area coroner, noted that conditions can feel even hotter within the canyons, emphasizing the dangers posed by the environment.
The Essex Coroner’s Court heard that both men were reported missing after their wives contacted authorities when they failed to check in for several hours. Rescue teams later discovered their bodies approximately 3 to 4 kilometers from their parked vehicle, lying about 350 meters apart among large rocks. Both were pronounced dead at a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah.
Coroner Brown ruled the deaths as a result of misadventure, describing the hike as an “intentional trip with unintended consequences.” She stated that the hike was a recreational route that typically takes about four hours to complete and does not require specialized equipment. However, the extreme heat proved to be a significant risk.
Text messages exchanged between Martinson and his wife indicated growing concern as time passed without communication. At 9:26 AM, she messaged him, “You must be cooking,” followed by a more anxious message later that day, expressing her distress at his silence.
The coroner concluded that both men succumbed to severe increases in body temperature, leading to organ failure. Cassius Newton, originally from Poole, had recently moved to Ras Al Khaimah with his wife, while Martinson had also relocated to the UAE shortly before the tragedy.
In response to the heartbreaking news, Chelsea Football Club expressed its devastation over Cassius Newton's death, highlighting the impact of the loss on the football community. Martinson’s wife also paid tribute to her husband online, describing him as “incredibly driven, hardworking and ambitious.” This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with outdoor activities in extreme weather conditions.
