Norwegian football sensation Erling Haaland has initiated legal proceedings against Norwegian Air Shuttle, alleging the airline unlawfully utilized his likeness in a promotional campaign. The lawsuit has sparked a response from the airline, which described the situation as "incomprehensible" and "regrettable."

Haaland's attorney, Thomas Hagen, detailed in a communication to AFP that the lawsuit centers around the airline's use of Haaland's distinctive features in advertisements for plane tickets during the recent football World Cup. The striker, who plays for Manchester City, played a pivotal role in leading Norway to the quarter-finals of the tournament, marking the country's first participation in the World Cup since 1998.

The crux of the dispute appears to involve a specific promotional image that featured a plane adorned with a ponytail, a hairstyle that Haaland sported until recently when he cut his hair. Norwegian Air had previously shared this image on social media with the caption, "We’ve never looked more Norwegian."

In response to the lawsuit, Norwegian Air confirmed they had received the legal writ and expressed confusion over the claims. Spokeswoman Catharina Solli stated, "Like almost all of Norway, we supported the national team this summer, through a few spontaneous posts inspired by trends on social media. It is regrettable that this support has been met with legal action, but we hope to have a reasonable dialogue so that we can continue, in the future as well, to support our common sport heroes."

The situation is set to escalate, with a hearing scheduled at the Oslo District Court on October 9. This legal action highlights the complexities surrounding the use of personal likenesses in advertising, particularly in the realm of sports, where athletes often become symbols of national pride and commercial interest.

As the case unfolds, it raises questions about the boundaries of promotional content and the rights of athletes in the commercial landscape. Haaland's popularity, especially following his recent performance in the World Cup, has made him a significant figure in sports marketing, and this lawsuit could set a precedent for how likenesses are used in the future.
