As Nigeria celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the government to ensure that the promised prosperity translates into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens. In a statement released on October 1, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, emphasized that the true measure of progress lies not in economic statistics but in the daily realities faced by families across the nation.

Archbishop Okoh highlighted critical areas where the government must focus its efforts, including reducing the costs of food, transportation, and energy. He pointed out that many Nigerians struggle to afford basic necessities, and young people are finding it increasingly difficult to secure decent employment. "The true test of progress is not in statistics alone. It is whether families can afford food, young people can find decent work, communities can live in safety and every child has a fair opportunity to build a future," he stated.

CAN urged the government to prioritize measurable outcomes that would alleviate the economic pressures faced by citizens. The association called for stronger support systems for vulnerable families, improved access to education and healthcare, and affordable credit options. They stressed the importance of transparent administration of these supports to prevent the diversion of funds meant for those in need.

The issue of security was also a major concern in CAN's statement. The association asserted that true prosperity cannot be achieved in an environment where citizens fear for their safety while farming, trading, or traveling. "There can be no meaningful prosperity where citizens cannot farm, trade, travel or sleep peacefully because of fear," they said, underscoring the need for a secure environment to foster economic growth.

Looking ahead to the 2027 political season, CAN cautioned against the politicization of Christianity, urging politicians not to exploit religious sentiments for electoral gain. The association reiterated that no politician should be viewed as a savior, and it is the right of Christians to support or critique candidates based on their values and policies. "The name of Jesus Christ must not be used as a political weapon," they insisted.

In conclusion, the Christian Association of Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to being a non-partisan moral voice in society, advocating for justice, accountability, and compassion while holding leaders accountable to these values. As Nigeria reflects on its journey since independence, CAN's call for genuine prosperity highlights the urgent need for the government to prioritize the welfare of its citizens in its economic policies.
