A tragic incident in Ondo State has resulted in the deaths of 48 individuals and left 182 others affected due to the consumption of a local alcoholic drink known as 'monkey tail'. The NMA-NAFDAC Liaison Committee has confirmed that high levels of methanol, a toxic industrial solvent, were found in samples of the drink, leading to severe health complications for many consumers.

Dr. Azim Adekunle Ashimi, chairman of the committee, provided an update detailing the laboratory findings from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). The analysis revealed that samples collected from the Odigbo and Irele local government areas contained not only methanol but also cannabis indica. The implications of these findings are dire, as methanol is not meant for human consumption and can cause irreversible damage.

Victims of the poisoning have exhibited a range of alarming symptoms, including severe headaches, abdominal pain, and altered consciousness. Some have suffered from permanent blindness, while others have experienced partial visual loss. Dr. Ashimi explained that methanol is metabolized in the liver into formic acid, which can severely damage the optic nerve and retinal cells, leading to blindness and potentially fatal outcomes.

In light of these developments, healthcare providers in Ondo and surrounding regions have been urged to be vigilant for patients presenting with sudden visual impairment or unexplained metabolic acidosis after consuming local alcoholic or herbal mixtures. The committee emphasized the importance of prompt medical intervention, including airway management and urgent haemodialysis when necessary.

Authorities have reported the arrest of 15 suspects connected to the production and distribution of the toxic drink. However, calls have been made for a more comprehensive crackdown on informal distilleries and illegal herbal mixture blenders, as well as the open-market distribution networks that facilitate the sale of such dangerous concoctions.

The committee has also advocated for nationwide awareness campaigns to educate the public about the dangers of consuming unlabelled and unregistered alcoholic beverages. Stricter control measures over the supply chain of methanol are necessary to prevent its misuse in beverage production, ensuring that such tragedies do not recur in the future.
