In recognition of World Heart Day 2026, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Osun State has called on residents to prioritize heart health and embrace healthier lifestyle choices. This appeal was made in a statement by the agency's spokesperson, Bunmi Olaseinde, on behalf of the State Director, Adebiyi Adefarasin Stephen, as the global community focuses on raising awareness about cardiovascular diseases.

The theme for this year's observance, "Don’t Miss a Beat," underscores the importance of awareness and preventive measures in combating heart disease and stroke. Adefarasin highlighted that cardiovascular diseases remain a significant health challenge in Nigeria, with various risk factors contributing to their prevalence.

The director identified critical risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption. He emphasized the need for regular health check-ups, encouraging citizens to monitor their blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. Early detection of these health issues can lead to timely interventions, potentially saving lives.

Adefarasin advised the public to adopt healthier eating habits by reducing the intake of salt, sugar, and fried foods while increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. He also stressed the importance of regular physical activity, abstaining from tobacco, limiting alcohol intake, managing stress effectively, and ensuring adequate rest as vital components of maintaining heart health.

Moreover, the NOA director warned against neglecting symptoms that could indicate serious health issues, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden weakness, facial drooping, and speech difficulties. He urged individuals to seek medical attention promptly when experiencing these warning signs.

"Know your numbers, make healthy choices, stay active and don’t ignore warning signs. Don’t miss the beat — your heart matters," Adefarasin stated, reinforcing the message of the day.

The agency also called upon families, community leaders, schools, workplaces, and health institutions to foster an environment that promotes heart-healthy habits. Adefarasin noted that daily lifestyle choices play a crucial role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, and collective efforts are essential to improve the overall health of the community.
