In a distressing incident at Loengnoktha Crown Prince Hospital in Yasothon, Thailand, a one-year-old boy lost part of his right index finger when a nurse accidentally cut it off with scissors. The incident occurred on September 11, during the boy's discharge process, as medical staff were removing gauze that secured an intravenous tube.

The family was preparing to take the child home after he had been admitted on September 2 for treatment of a respiratory and gastrointestinal infection. According to reports from the Bangkok Post, the male assistant nurse involved in the incident struggled to cut through the gauze and inadvertently caused the injury, resulting in significant blood loss.

Following the accident, the severed finger was preserved in an ice box to facilitate its potential reattachment at another medical facility. The boy was subsequently transferred to Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital, where he underwent two surgeries. However, it remains uncertain whether the surgeries were successful, as the boy continues to recover in the hospital and is reportedly experiencing breathing difficulties.

The incident came to light after the boy's mother, Wiphaphon Namkhan, shared details and images on social media, expressing her shock and distress over the event. In response to the incident, the hospital issued a public apology and confirmed that the assistant nurse has been suspended pending an investigation.

The hospital's management stated, "Following the incident, the medical and nursing team worked together to provide assistance to the patient to the best of their abilities, and a comprehensive review of patient care procedures has been conducted to ensure the safety of future hospital patients."

In light of the gravity of the situation, the family has reportedly filed a police report, seeking accountability for the incident that has left them devastated. As the boy continues his recovery, the hospital faces scrutiny over its protocols and the training of its staff to prevent such tragedies in the future.
