British mother dies heroically while rescuing sons from sea during Bahamas holiday
Leanne Gregory tragically drowned while saving her children during a family trip.

A British mother, Leanne Gregory, has tragically lost her life while attempting to save her two sons from drowning during a family holiday in the Bahamas. The incident occurred on Tuesday off the coast of Bimini, where the family had been enjoying a vacation planned as an early celebration of their upcoming 10th wedding anniversary.
Leanne, 36, from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was on the beach with her husband, Nathan Gregory, when their sons got into trouble while snorkeling in shallow waters. According to reports from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the boys were successfully rescued, but their mother was swept away by a strong current and could not be saved.
Nathan Gregory, speaking to the BBC, expressed his profound grief over the loss of his wife, whom he described as his "childhood sweetheart." He highlighted her bravery during the incident, calling her a "hero... in life and in death" for her selfless act of trying to save their children. "There are no words I can use to describe Leanne, same as anyone she has ever known," he stated, reflecting on their 22-year relationship that began when they were just 14 years old.
The couple had been enjoying their time together as a family, but the joyful holiday turned into a nightmare in less than ten minutes. Nathan recounted how both parents rushed into the water upon realizing their sons were in danger. Despite their efforts, Leanne was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead after attempts to revive her at a local medical clinic.
In the wake of this tragedy, a fundraising page has been established to support the grieving family, raising nearly £9,000 so far. Councillor Richard MacRae, who represents Stapleford North on Broxtowe Borough Council, expressed the community's sorrow, stating, "It’s sad, it’s heartbreaking, when something tragic happens, and people have got young kids involved, it is just a different level."
The local Stapleford Fire Station also conveyed their condolences, emphasizing their support for Leanne’s family during this difficult time. Meanwhile, the Royal Bahamas Police confirmed that an autopsy would be conducted, but they do not suspect any foul play.
The UK Foreign Office has reached out to local authorities and is providing assistance to Nathan and the children as they navigate this overwhelming loss. Nathan Gregory remains focused on being strong for his sons while mourning the loss of a mother who had a deep love for the ocean and had planned their holiday around marine life and family bonding activities.
