Kenyan man sentenced to life for sexually assaulting 7-year-old boy
Athumani Juma receives life imprisonment for the sexual assault of a minor in Kwale County.

In a significant ruling, Athumani Juma has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the sexual assault of a seven-year-old boy in Kwale County, Kenya. This decision was announced by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on October 25, 2026, following a thorough investigation into the heinous crime that occurred in June 2025.
The assault took place on June 7, 2025, in Vivalani Village, Lungalunga Sub-County, where Juma lured the young boy to his home under the pretense of offering him sweets. Once inside, he subjected the child to a horrific act of sexual violence, threatening him with severe consequences if he revealed the incident to anyone.
Initially, the boy remained silent about the abuse, confiding only in his brothers. However, as time passed, he developed a troubling physical condition that eventually prompted a family member to inquire about his health. It was during this conversation that the child disclosed the abuse and identified Juma, a local water vendor, as his attacker.
Following the revelation, community members acted swiftly, apprehending Juma and handing him over to the police. The DCI launched an investigation, gathering evidence and testimonies from five witnesses, which ultimately led to the prosecution's case being presented in court.
Despite Juma's denial of the charges and claims of being framed, the magistrate found his defense unconvincing. The court deemed the child's testimony credible and consistent, further supported by medical evidence that corroborated the boy's account of the abuse.
On October 5, 2026, Juma was found guilty of defilement under Section 8(1) and Section 8(2) of the Sexual Offences Act. The court's decision serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of timely reporting and thorough investigations in cases of child sexual abuse.
The DCI emphasized that this case highlights the need for communities to work together to protect vulnerable children. They urged the public to report any suspected cases of child abuse immediately, either at local police stations or through their toll-free line and WhatsApp contact. The fight against sexual offences and violence against children remains a top priority for the DCI, and they continue to advocate for a collective responsibility in safeguarding children's rights and wellbeing.
