A 15-year-old boy from Alaska, Derek Parker Aghnaanga, has been rescued after an astonishing 62 hours adrift in the Bering Sea, following a tragic boating accident that resulted in the deaths of his brother and cousin. The incident occurred on September 4, when Aghnaanga, along with his older brother Sidney Kulowiyi and cousin Barton Rookok, was fishing for halibut near St. Lawrence Island.

The small skiff they were in capsized, leaving Aghnaanga as the sole survivor. He was discovered clinging to the overturned vessel by the crew of the fishing boat Northwest Explorer, who were alerted by the Alaska State Troopers after the trio did not return home. Captain Adam White of the Northwest Explorer recounted the dramatic rescue, stating that they spotted an unusual object on the horizon, which turned out to be Aghnaanga.

Upon being rescued, Aghnaanga shared his horrifying experience with the crew. Captain White reported, "Through the teeth chattering, he had mentioned that his brother was still under the skiff and then he said that in the previous night before our rescue that his cousin had slipped away off the top of the skiff." This revelation highlights the traumatic ordeal the young boy faced during his time at sea.

The Coast Guard was notified late Sunday night, leading to the Northwest Explorer's involvement in the search. They found Aghnaanga at around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, enduring severe hypothermia symptoms as the water temperature was a chilling 10 degrees Celsius. Crew members quickly wrapped him in blankets and kept him engaged in conversation as they made their way to Nome to reunite him with his family.

Aghnaanga's mother revealed that her son had been on top of the skiff for nearly three days without food or water, while his brother, who was the boat's captain, tragically drowned after becoming trapped under the vessel. A family member confirmed the heartbreaking loss of both Kulowiyi and Rookok, aged 35 and 34, respectively.

In light of this tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Aghnaanga's family and cover funeral expenses for the deceased. The campaign has already garnered significant support, nearing its goal of $40,000. Captain White praised Aghnaanga's resilience, stating, "That kid was on top of that skiff. I mean, that's one tough kid."

This harrowing incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise while engaging in maritime activities, and the community continues to rally around Aghnaanga and his family during this difficult time.
