The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has taken decisive action in response to the confirmed Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory, identifying 53 contacts of the patient for follow-up. In a bid to contain the outbreak, the NCDC has instructed hospitals across the country to isolate any suspected cases without waiting for laboratory confirmation.

The confirmed Ebola patient, a 42-year-old woman, returned to Nigeria from Uganda on October 3. She began exhibiting symptoms, including fever and sore throat, shortly after her arrival. The NCDC was alerted on October 19, and subsequent laboratory tests confirmed her infection with the Bundibugyo strain of the virus on October 20. Fortunately, the patient has shown significant improvement while receiving care in isolation.

Dr. Jide Idris, the Director-General of the NCDC, emphasized the importance of immediate action in identifying and managing suspected cases to protect healthcare workers and prevent further transmission. He stated, "Any suspected case must be promptly separated from other patients and reported to the relevant public health authorities."

The 53 identified contacts include healthcare workers, the patient’s spouse, and domestic staff. These individuals will be monitored for a period of 21 days following their last potential exposure to the confirmed case. The NCDC is prioritizing contact tracing as a key component of its response strategy.

In a related development, a suspected Ebola case reported in Rivers State on October 23 has tested negative, alleviating concerns of a wider outbreak in that region. However, the NCDC continues to stress the importance of ongoing surveillance and investigation of suspected cases.

The agency has activated its national incident management system at the highest level, coordinating response efforts with the Federal Ministry of Health, FCT authorities, and other partners. The response includes comprehensive measures such as surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory investigations, and strict infection prevention protocols. Hospitals are urged to implement effective screening and triage systems, separate suspected cases immediately, and apply appropriate infection control measures.

Dr. Idris also highlighted the need for public cooperation and understanding, urging individuals identified as contacts not to panic. He reassured the public that being identified as a contact does not equate to having contracted Ebola, and he cautioned against the spread of misinformation that could hinder containment efforts.

The NCDC’s proactive measures reflect lessons learned from Nigeria’s previous experience with the Ebola outbreak in 2014. The agency is committed to utilizing these insights to enhance current preparedness and response strategies, ensuring that healthcare workers and the general public remain safe as they navigate this health challenge.
