Nigeria's manufacturing sector is set for a significant upgrade as part of a newly established economic partnership with China. This development was announced by the outgoing Consul General of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, during a reception celebrating the 77th anniversary of the People's Republic of China and her departure after three years in office.

The partnership was formalized on March 26 with the signing of the Framework Agreement on Economic Partnership for Shared Development, which Yuqing described as a landmark achievement in the ongoing collaboration between the two nations. The agreement aims to enhance practical cooperation in various sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, trade liberalization, green development, and digital trade.

Yuqing emphasized that this agreement provides a long-term and stable framework for trade and investment between Nigeria and China. She highlighted the positive impact of China's zero-tariff policy, which benefits 53 African countries with diplomatic relations with China, stating that it has already led to increased access for Nigerian premium products like cocoa, avocados, and coffee in Chinese markets.

Flagship projects such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Free Trade Zone, and Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone are pivotal to Nigeria's industrialization efforts. Yuqing noted that these zones currently host over 300 companies and have created tens of thousands of jobs. She projected that the Lekki Deep Sea Port alone is expected to generate hundreds of billions of dollars in economic benefits and create over 100,000 jobs during its concession period.

In addition to economic initiatives, Yuqing spoke about the consulate's contributions to social welfare, including restoring sight to over 900 Nigerian cataract patients through the "Renewed Hope, Rebirth from the Light" program and providing support to over 1,000 low-income families through a hunger alleviation initiative.

Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Secretary to the Lagos State Government, praised Yuqing for her significant role in enhancing Nigeria-China relations across various sectors, including trade, investment, agriculture, education, healthcare, technology, and renewable energy. Salu-Hundeyin acknowledged Yuqing's efforts in facilitating deeper bilateral cooperation, which has been beneficial for both nations.

As Nigeria continues to strengthen its economic ties with China, the focus on upgrading the manufacturing sector is expected to play a crucial role in the nation's economic development and job creation efforts.
