NNPC outlines strategy to position Nigeria as a global gas hub at GASTECH 2026
NNPC reveals plans to enhance Nigeria's gas production and export capabilities at GASTECH.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has announced its ambitious plans to transform Nigeria into a global gas hub, emphasizing the activation of multiple pathways to achieve this goal. This declaration was made by Olalekan Ogunleye, the Executive Vice President of NNPC, Gas, Power & New Energy, during the 2026 Gas Technology & Exhibition Conference (GASTECH) held in Bangkok, Thailand.
Speaking on a panel titled "The New LNG Order: Leadership Strategies for Energy Security and Growth," Ogunleye highlighted the challenges posed by global geopolitics and conflicts that affect energy supply and demand. He noted that Nigeria is strategically positioned to leverage its substantial gas reserves, estimated at over 215 trillion cubic feet (tcf), to boost domestic industrialization and expand its export capabilities.
Ogunleye emphasized the commercial nature of gas development and monetization, stating that NNPC is implementing a comprehensive Gas Master Plan (GMP) designed to increase Nigeria's gas reserves from 215 tcf to over 600 tcf. The company aims to ramp up national gas production to 10 billion standard cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) by 2027, with a further increase to 12 Bcf/d by 2030.
The NNPC executive pointed out that Nigeria is already a reliable supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is currently undergoing a significant expansion of its LNG projects. He referenced the successful operation of Trains 1-6, which produce 22 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and have exported over 6,000 LNG cargoes since 1999. Additionally, he mentioned the upcoming completion of Train 7, expected in 2027.
Ogunleye also discussed Nigeria's geographical advantages, which position it favorably for both the Atlantic Basin and Asian markets. He asserted that the country's substantial gas resources and commitment to gas development make it a strategic supplier in the global market.
The NNPC's approach integrates both domestic gas utilization and export strategies, aiming to enhance job creation, energy security, and economic prosperity. Ogunleye stated that the dual pathway of leveraging gas exports for foreign exchange while promoting domestic gas use is crucial for Nigeria's growth.
To attract investment in new LNG projects, Ogunleye noted that Nigeria has established a robust legal and regulatory framework, complemented by attractive fiscal incentives. He encouraged investors and financiers to engage in the development of Nigeria's LNG projects, asserting, "With continued efforts towards stable security, competitive gas pricing and assured gas supply, there is no better time for investors to confidently participate."
GASTECH, now in its 54th edition, is recognized as the world's largest exhibition and conference focused on natural gas, LNG, hydrogen, and low-carbon solutions, drawing around 50,000 participants from over 150 countries. The event serves as a platform for energy experts, policymakers, and investors to discuss the future of energy security and infrastructure investment.
