The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) has reiterated its commitment to ensuring workplace safety and security for factory workers in Ogun State's free trade zones. This assurance was made by NEPZA's Administrative Manager, Mr. Steven Makanjuola, during a press conference held at the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) in Igbesa, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.

The conference, themed "Industrial Development, Community Impact and Nigeria–China Partnership," highlighted the importance of balancing industrial growth with the safety of workers. Makanjuola emphasized that free trade zones are not only designed to attract investment but also to provide a secure and conducive working environment for employees.

This commitment comes in the wake of a recent incident where a steel company in Sagamu was shut down following the tragic death of a worker due to an operational accident. The Ogun State Government took swift action by issuing a stop-work order after safety officers identified significant breaches of workplace safety regulations during an inspection of the facility.

Makanjuola stated that NEPZA is actively collaborating with zone operators, investors, and relevant government agencies to ensure compliance with safety regulations, emergency response measures, and the overall welfare of workers. He noted, "Industrial growth must go hand-in-hand with workers’ safety," underscoring the authority's dedication to maintaining high safety standards across all operations within the free trade zones.

In addition to workplace safety, the conference also addressed the broader impact of the OGFTZ on the local community. Mr. Tope Anthony, the Public Relations Manager of OGFTZ, highlighted that the zone's industrial activities significantly contribute to employment opportunities and the demand for local services. He pointed out that corporate interventions by the zone include initiatives in education, healthcare, road infrastructure, water supply, and youth empowerment.

Anthony mentioned the successful operation of the China–Nigeria Friendship School, which has been serving over 700 pupils for more than 14 years, as a testament to the zone's commitment to community welfare. Furthermore, he revealed that road construction projects initiated by the zone are set to benefit over 350,000 residents, enhancing connectivity and access to essential services.

The NEPZA and OGFTZ officials concluded the conference by reaffirming their dedication to fostering community development alongside industrial growth. They emphasized that ongoing engagement with stakeholders is crucial to strengthening workplace security and improving the livelihoods of those living in host communities.
