The United Kingdom has announced an increase in the financial requirements for international students applying for study visas, effective from November 30, 2026. This change will particularly impact students from Nigeria and other countries seeking admission to British universities, as they will now need to demonstrate higher living expenses.

According to Punch Newspapers, the UK Home Office has revised the maintenance requirements for international students. Those studying in London must show access to at least £14,130 for living expenses, up from the previous requirement of £13,761. This translates to a monthly living expense of £1,570, an increase from £1,529. For students enrolled in courses lasting nine months or more, this adjustment represents a total increase of £369.

Students planning to study outside of London will also face heightened financial expectations. The minimum monthly requirement for these students will rise to £1,203, compared to the earlier figure of £1,171. Consequently, the maximum nine-month maintenance requirement for students outside London will increase from £10,539 to £10,827, marking an increase of £288.

These new financial thresholds are separate from tuition fees and other visa-related costs. Prospective students must ensure they have sufficient funds to cover both their living expenses and educational costs. Additionally, they need to account for the student visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, which grants access to the UK’s National Health Service.

The increase in financial requirements comes amid rising living costs in the UK, which have placed additional financial pressure on international students. Many students, including those from Nigeria, are already grappling with challenges such as accommodation costs and limited job opportunities due to restrictions on working hours.

The contribution of international students to the UK economy is significant, with approximately 685,565 international students enrolled in UK higher education institutions during the 2024/2025 academic year, representing about 24% of the total student population. Notably, around 622,000 of these students hail from countries outside the European Union, while approximately 63,600 are from EU nations. Professor Padam Simkhada, the Dean of Global Impact and Research at the University of Chester, highlighted that international students contributed around £41.9 billion to the UK economy during the 2021/2022 academic year.

As these financial requirements take effect, prospective students are urged to reassess their budgets and ensure they can meet the necessary financial thresholds before applying for a UK student visa. This adjustment underscores the ongoing financial challenges faced by international students in the UK, despite their vital role in the higher education sector and the broader economy.
