In a significant move to modernize medical education in Bayelsa State, Governor Senator Douye Diri has unveiled Artificial Intelligence-powered robotic tutors at the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) in Yenagoa. This initiative, presented on Monday, is part of the university's 2025–2029 Strategic Plan aimed at enhancing research and technological development within the institution.

During the unveiling ceremony, Diri emphasized the importance of integrating emerging technologies into the educational framework while maintaining the essential role of traditional classroom interactions and mentorship from lecturers. He stated, "Technology should complement physical classroom interactions, not replace them. The mentorship role of lecturers remains essential to the development of our students."

The governor urged the university's management to implement the strategic plan effectively, focusing on measurable improvements in academic standards, research capabilities, infrastructure, and the overall quality of graduates. He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to supporting the university's ASPIRE Agenda, which prioritizes academic excellence, sustainability, partnerships, innovation, and leadership development.

Diri commended the university's leadership, particularly Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dimie Ogoina, for their efforts in creating a roadmap for institutional growth. He encouraged collaboration with the state Ministries of Education and Health to achieve the university's objectives. The governor also highlighted ongoing investments in science, technical, and vocational education aimed at equipping young people with practical skills for future employment and entrepreneurship.

The introduction of robotic tutors is seen as a pivotal step towards enhancing the quality of medical education, with Diri expressing confidence that the state’s initiatives would lead to an increase in the number of qualified health professionals, including doctors, nurses, and engineers.

In addition to the robotic tutors, Diri announced that the BMU campus at Sampou is nearing completion, which will provide additional facilities for the institution’s expansion. He also inspected the newly established Bayelsa Medical University Teaching Hospital, which is expected to offer advanced diagnostic services, thereby improving access to specialized healthcare for residents and reducing the need for medical travel outside the state.

Prof. Ogoina shared the university’s vision of becoming a globally recognized institution for medical education, research, and innovation, emphasizing the role of technology in achieving this goal. He noted that BMU has successfully secured accreditation for nine academic programs and that nursing science students have achieved a remarkable 96 percent pass rate in their professional examinations.

Furthermore, Ogoina revealed that BMU researchers have produced over 70 peer-reviewed publications, showcasing the institution's dedication to advancing medical knowledge. The university has also established a virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and mixed-reality studio to enhance digital learning and practical training.

Plans are underway to develop a smart campus, improve internet connectivity, and establish a Centre of Excellence for Digital Health and Biomedical Innovation. Ogoina expressed gratitude for Diri's support and optimism about the university's potential to achieve its long-term ambitions by 2029, aiming to be recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in health sciences education and research.
