The domestic supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly referred to as cooking gas, has seen a notable increase of 17.78% year-on-year, reaching 4.5 million litres per day in September 2026. This surge in supply, reported by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), marks a rise from 3.7 million litres per day in September 2025.

On a month-to-month basis, the supply also rose significantly, with a 33.33% increase from 4.5 million litres per day in August 2026. Despite this positive trend in supply, the price of cooking gas has also escalated, rising by 7.14% to N1,400 per kg in October 2026, compared to N1,300 per kg in September.

Industry experts attribute the rise in supply to enhanced local production capabilities. Mr. Oladapo Olatunbosun, former National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), emphasized the importance of continued investment and government support to avert potential shortages. He stated, "Local production has increased, which is the reason for the result. However, there is much to be done by both the government and stakeholders to drive the development required to harness the potential of LPG."

Olatunbosun urged the government to foster an environment conducive to the growth of indigenous operators and to support major domestic producers like Dangote Petroleum Refinery. He believes that such measures would enhance output and stabilize the energy market. Furthermore, he highlighted the need for affordable supplies to surrounding communities, asserting that increased investment in production and distribution would lead to better availability of LPG.

Similarly, Mazi Colman Obasi, National President of the Oil and Gas Services Providers Association of Nigeria (OGSPAN), described the growth in supply as a positive development. However, he cautioned that the real measure of success lies in whether consumers experience improved access and affordability. He remarked, "The growth in supply is a positive development because availability is fundamental to the expansion of LPG consumption. However, the real test is whether consumers are seeing improved access and more affordable prices."

Obasi also pointed out that while increased supply is beneficial, it does not guarantee reduced retail prices. He noted that factors such as transportation, logistics, and exchange-rate fluctuations could impact costs. He stressed the need for efficient distribution systems to ensure that the additional volumes of LPG reach consumers effectively, thereby encouraging more households to transition to using LPG.

As Nigeria continues to navigate its energy landscape, the developments in cooking gas supply and pricing will be crucial for both consumers and industry stakeholders alike.
