Electricity sector experts in Nigeria are advocating for the local manufacturing of electricity meters, sustainable financing, and the adoption of smart technology to address the country's metering challenges. This call was made during a recent webinar focused on accelerating meter deployment and closing the significant metering gap in the nation.

Mr. Odion Omonfoman, who hosted the webinar, highlighted the achievements of his company, which has attained over 90 percent metering coverage and installed more than 200,000 meters through the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme and a vendor-financing model. He emphasized the importance of metering as a strategic investment in revenue assurance, stating that it allows consumers to pay for the electricity they actually use and helps mitigate the issues associated with estimated billing.

Engr. Alegie Alfred, the Head of Metering at Power Limited Electric Company (MPLEC), discussed ongoing efforts to combat electricity theft and meter bypassing. He noted that Abia Power is implementing measures such as routine inspections, remote monitoring, and customer education to protect revenue and enhance service delivery.

The discussion also included insights from Ms. Ravleen Sethi, Director of Large Corporate Ratings at CareEdge, who shared lessons from India’s experience in meter deployment. She pointed out that government-backed initiatives, private sector investments, and improved financing arrangements have significantly boosted the rollout of smart meters in India. The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), initiated in 2021, was particularly highlighted as a key factor in enhancing the country’s metering manufacturing capabilities.

From the manufacturing standpoint, Engr. Durosola Omogbenigun, President of the Meter Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, called for a comprehensive national metering plan. He stressed the need for collaboration among the Federal and state governments, electricity distribution companies, investors, regulators, and local manufacturers to ensure a coordinated approach to metering in Nigeria.

The experts' recommendations underscore the critical need for a robust metering strategy that not only improves revenue collection but also enhances customer satisfaction and curbs electricity theft. As Nigeria continues to face challenges in its electricity sector, the push for local meter production and sustainable financing appears essential for achieving a reliable and efficient power supply.
