Rotimi Amaechi, the presidential running mate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has shared details of a health initiative he implemented during his tenure as the governor of Rivers State. Speaking at the 'Her Health, Her Power Conference Africa 2026' in Abuja, Amaechi revealed that he paid pregnant women N10,000 each to encourage them to attend antenatal care. This program was part of his efforts to address the alarming maternal-child mortality rates in the state, which was ranked second highest during his governorship.

Amaechi, who served as governor from October 26, 2007, to May 29, 2015, emphasized the critical link between women's health and economic stability. He stated that many women in Nigeria are engaged in agriculture, and improving their health is essential for overall economic growth. "On the issue of health, you certainly cannot make the female look healthier and stronger if the economy is bad," he remarked.

During his administration, Amaechi focused on building healthcare infrastructure, establishing medical centers in every village across Rivers State. He noted that each center was staffed with two doctors and nurses to ensure adequate healthcare services. The incentive of N10,000 for women attending antenatal care significantly increased participation, as many women were drawn to the centers not just for health reasons but for the financial support offered.

Amaechi reflected on the success of this initiative, stating that it was crucial for women to receive both health care and education. He insisted that educated women are better leaders and can contribute more effectively to society. His administration's efforts to combat maternal mortality through improved healthcare access and financial incentives aimed to create a healthier population, which he believes is intertwined with economic progress.
