Ikom Okada Riders Observe Compulsory Fasting and Prayers to Enhance Safety
Motorcyclists in Ikom, Cross River State, are engaging in weekly fasting and prayers to reduce crime and accidents.

In a unique initiative aimed at enhancing safety and reducing crime, commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as Okada riders, in Ikom Town, Cross River State, have instituted a compulsory one-day fasting and prayer session. This spiritual exercise, which is strictly enforced by the Okada Riders Association, occurs weekly and is designed to foster unity among the riders while seeking divine protection against accidents and robbery.
Maxwell Nsan, a 40-year-old Okada rider, shared insights into the significance of the fasting ritual. He explained that during this day of fasting, all riders are expected to refrain from operating their motorcycles with passengers. Nsan emphasized the seriousness of the enforcement, stating that any rider found violating this rule faces strict sanctions. "We will converge at a particular venue to pray while we fast. During this time, no Okada rider is to be seen playing the road with passengers, else serious sanctions are applied against offenders," he noted.
The initiative has reportedly yielded positive results, with many riders, including Nsan, expressing that they have experienced fewer negative incidents in their daily operations since the commencement of the fasting practice. The local authorities have also acknowledged the impact of these spiritual exercises on crime rates in the area.
CSP Abdulrahman Lagbe, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ikom Town, confirmed the observed reduction in crime, attributing it to the collective prayers of the community. He stated, "I can tell you that crimes have reduced in Ikom, but despite that, your prayers will help us while we also intensify our approaches to stem crimes. As a Muslim, I know that without God and prayers, you cannot succeed. Our responsibility is to provide security, but it is God who secures us."
Pastor Mercy Nsor, the chairman of Ikom LGA, also echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of faith and community efforts in maintaining safety. The collaboration between the Okada riders and local law enforcement showcases a proactive approach to tackling crime through spiritual means.
As the Okada riders continue their weekly fasting and prayers, they remain hopeful that their efforts will further enhance safety in Ikom, creating a more secure environment for both riders and residents alike.
