The Nigeria Police Force held a memorial parade on Monday in Abuja to honor ten officers from the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) who were killed in a gun battle with suspected bandits in Kebbi State. The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, emphasized the commitment of the force to its constitutional duty of safeguarding lives and property during the ceremony.

The fallen officers lost their lives on August 10, 2026, while engaging a heavily armed group of bandits that were reportedly moving from Kebbi to Zamfara. In the encounter, two additional officers sustained injuries, and two civilians also lost their lives. Despite the tragic loss, Disu highlighted that the officers' sacrifices were not in vain, as at least 17 bandits were neutralized and four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed during the clash.

Disu expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased officers, acknowledging the profound loss they have suffered. "Behind every fallen officer is a family that has lost a husband, father, son, brother, and loved one," he said. He assured the families that the police force would not abandon them and would continue to support them in their time of grief.

The Inspector-General reiterated the resolve of the Nigeria Police Force to confront banditry and other forms of violent crime. He stated, "We shall not be intimidated, we shall not relent, and we shall not allow the sacrifices of our fallen heroes to be in vain." Disu also called on all Nigerians to remember the bravery of the officers and the thousands of police personnel who continue to risk their lives for the safety of the nation.

In a show of solidarity, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the SIS, Abayomi Shogunle, praised the courage of the fallen officers, stating that they stood their ground during the attack and did not abandon their posts. He noted that the battle damage assessments indicated that many terrorists were killed due to the officers' bravery. Shogunle urged the Inspector-General to ensure that the families of the fallen officers are well taken care of, emphasizing that this support would motivate current officers.

The memorial event served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel in Nigeria, highlighting the ongoing battle against crime and the need for continued support for those who serve in the line of duty.
