The Kwara State Government is advocating for a shift in mindset among the youth, encouraging them to prioritize entrepreneurship and skills acquisition instead of solely pursuing traditional white-collar jobs. This call to action was made by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Ndanusa Shehu, during an event in Ilorin on Saturday.

Shehu emphasized the importance of self-reliance in today's job market, where conventional employment opportunities are increasingly limited. He stated that young individuals should actively seek to develop marketable skills and explore various sectors that can lead to economic independence. "Rather than focusing only on white-collar jobs, our young people should take advantage of opportunities to acquire skills, develop their talents and embrace entrepreneurship," he said.

The commissioner outlined the government's commitment to engaging with youths and collaborating with stakeholders to enhance developmental opportunities. He highlighted ongoing partnerships with development partners, parents, and community organizations to encourage productive activities among young people. Shehu also called on community-based and faith-based organizations to play a crucial role in mentoring youths, helping them cultivate the values and character necessary for successful ventures.

In discussing agriculture, Shehu pointed out that young people do not need to own farmland to participate in the sector. He explained that there are numerous opportunities throughout the agricultural value chain, including processing, packaging, marketing, and logistics. "Youths can explore opportunities in processing, packaging, marketing, logistics and other services within the agricultural value chain. They can build sustainable businesses around agriculture without necessarily going into the traditional practice of owning and cultivating farmland," he noted.

The state government is also undertaking several projects aimed at enhancing youth engagement. These include the rehabilitation of the Ilorin Stadium and the construction of new stadiums in Lafiagi and Offa, which are expected to support sports development and provide additional avenues for youth involvement in productive activities.

Additionally, Shehu mentioned the Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme, which offers young graduates the chance to work with start-ups and other organizations for a year, providing them with income and practical work experience. He stated that this exposure could significantly improve the employability of participants and better prepare them for future career opportunities.

The Commissioner for Youth Development reiterated the importance of seizing available opportunities, acquiring relevant skills, and exploring entrepreneurial ventures that can lead to economic independence for the youth of Kwara State.
