The Benue State Government has made a significant commitment to public health by approving N294.53 million as counterpart funding for the 2026 Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) campaign. This decision was announced by the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ogwuche, during a press briefing in Makurdi on Saturday.

The funding approval was reached during a recent meeting of the State Executive and Security Council held at the Government House. Dr. Ogwuche emphasized that this financial commitment underscores the government's dedication to enhancing preventive healthcare measures, particularly aimed at protecting children from the dangers of malaria.

Dr. Ogwuche articulated that the initiative is part of the governor’s broader vision to revamp the health sector through strategic investments and stronger partnerships. He stated, "The Ministry of Health and Human Services, under the present administration, has continued to pursue a more proactive approach to health-sector development, with emphasis on resource mobilisation, partnership building, effective programme coordination and interventions that deliver measurable benefits to the people of the state."

The approved funding is intended to complement the financial, technical, and implementation support provided by the development partner, PATH, for the SMC campaign. This collaboration is expected to enhance government ownership and ensure the sustainability of the malaria prevention program.

Dr. Ogwuche highlighted the importance of accountability and professionalism among healthcare workers and program managers, stressing that the success of the campaign hinges not only on the resources allocated but also on the dedication of those involved in its execution. He urged healthcare professionals and volunteers to ensure that medicines and resources reach the children who need them most and to maintain accurate records throughout the process.

In addition to urging healthcare workers, the commissioner called on parents, caregivers, traditional and religious leaders, as well as community leaders, to play an active role in the campaign. He encouraged them to ensure that all eligible children participate and receive the necessary medications from trained health personnel.

Dr. Ogwuche further appealed for community cooperation with health workers to maximize outreach efforts and achieve comprehensive coverage in the fight against malaria. He expressed gratitude to PATH for their ongoing support of the SMC campaign and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to collaborating with development partners, health workers, and communities to ensure effective implementation and optimal impact of the newly approved resources.

Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention is a crucial public health strategy aimed at protecting children in regions with seasonal and intense malaria transmission. The initiative involves administering recommended antimalarial treatments to eligible children during peak transmission periods, regardless of whether they exhibit malaria symptoms.
