The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has disclosed the monthly earnings of Nigerian governors, revealing that each governor receives N648,560.62 before additional allowances are factored in. This breakdown highlights the components of their salaries, which include a basic salary, hardship allowance, and consistency allowance.

According to the report, a governor's monthly pay consists of a basic salary of N185,308.75, a hardship allowance of N92,654.37, and a consistency allowance of N370,617.50. In comparison, deputy governors earn a total of N616,062.69 monthly, made up of a basic salary of N176,017.91, a hardship allowance of N88,008.95, and a consistency allowance of N352,035.83.

While these figures provide a glimpse into the earnings of state leaders, the RMAFC also noted that governors and their deputies are entitled to a variety of other allowances. These include provisions for motor vehicle fuelling, personal and special assistants, domestic staff, entertainment, utilities, security, newspapers, accommodation, medical, and furniture allowances. However, the commission did not assign specific monetary values to these additional benefits, indicating that the published figures represent only a fraction of the total compensation that governors and their deputies receive each month.

In a broader context, the financial remuneration of governors is part of a larger conversation about public service salaries in Nigeria. Earlier reports indicated that the President of Nigeria earns an annual salary of ₦14,058,820, translating to a monthly income of ₦1,171,568. In contrast, the reported annual earnings for state governors amount to ₦7,782,968, or approximately ₦648,581 per month, according to data released by the RMAFC.

The RMAFC's findings have reignited discussions on the appropriateness of these salaries, especially in light of the economic challenges faced by many Nigerians. The lack of transparency regarding additional allowances further complicates the public's understanding of how much state leaders truly earn.
