YPP names Peter Agada as presidential candidate, replaces Zugwai-Chukwu
The Young Progressives Party has officially replaced Anita Zugwai-Chukwu with Peter Agada as its presidential candidate for the upcoming 2027 elections.

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has made a significant change in its leadership structure by substituting Anita Zugwai-Chukwu with Peter Agada as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections. This announcement was made during the party's Presidential and Vice-Presidential Substitution/Affirmation Programme, where Agada was formally presented alongside his running mate, Ndidi Patience Key.
Previously, Zugwai-Chukwu had been the party's presidential candidate, serving as a placeholder during the initial stages of the electoral process. At the affirmation event, YPP National Chairman Emmanuel Amakiri, represented by Deputy National Chairperson Nana Aisha Mahmoud, described this transition as a pivotal moment for the party as it gears up for the elections.
Mahmoud emphasized that the change is not just a mere rebranding but a reaffirmation of the YPP's commitment to offering Nigerians a credible and inclusive political alternative. She highlighted the pressing demands of the citizenry for opportunities, security, economic stability, and accountable governance. The party aims to create a political environment where young people, women, and professionals can actively engage in the democratic process.
In her address, Mahmoud called for unity within the party, urging members to avoid divisions based on support for different candidates. "From this moment, there must be no Presidential camp and Vice-Presidential camp. There must be no old members and new members. There must be no North and South within our campaign family," she stated.
In his acceptance speech, Agada articulated that his candidacy is driven by a desire to tackle the pressing issues facing Nigerians, including poverty, insecurity, and unemployment. He referenced alarming statistics, noting that approximately 140 million Nigerians live at or below the national poverty line, as reported by the International Monetary Fund. He also highlighted the urgent need for food assistance for an estimated 35 million Nigerians during the upcoming lean season.
Agada expressed his commitment to addressing the root causes of these challenges rather than just managing their effects. He stated, "Today is not about me. Today is about 140 million Nigerians that the IMF says are living at or below a national poverty line." He stressed that his administration would prioritize security, asserting that without safety, economic activities and educational pursuits cannot thrive.
He pledged to implement what he termed "governance with GPS," focusing on competence and results-driven leadership. Agada's vision for the YPP is built on a foundation of ideas and ideology, aiming to ensure that effective governance is at the forefront of their campaign.
As the YPP prepares for the upcoming elections, the party's new leadership is expected to resonate with a populace eager for change and effective governance, setting the stage for a competitive political landscape in 2027.
