Maryam Ibrahim Dan’azumi clinches top prize at the King Abdulaziz International Qur'anic Competition.

Maryam Ibrahim Dan’azumi, a talented student from Gombe State, has made history by winning the prestigious 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur'anic Competition held in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Representing Nigeria, Maryam excelled in the category that required competitors to memorize the entire Holy Qur’an, demonstrating her skills in recitation, Tajweed, and interpretation, covering 60 Hizb with Tafsir.
Her victory is particularly noteworthy as it marks a significant milestone in the competition's history, being the first time female contestants participated in its 46-year existence. This landmark achievement not only highlights Maryam's exceptional abilities but also brings international recognition to Gombe State and Nigeria as a whole.
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, expressed his pride in Maryam's accomplishment, extending congratulations to her family, teachers, and the Muslim community in the state. In a statement released by the Director-General of Press Affairs at the Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, the governor emphasized that Maryam's success is a testament to the values of discipline, dedication, and commitment to learning.
Governor Yahaya remarked, "I am deeply proud of our daughter’s exceptional achievement on the global stage. Maryam’s triumph exemplifies the excellence and rich educational heritage of Gombe State. Her victory brings pride not only to Gombe but to Nigeria as a whole."
He further noted that Maryam's journey from local to national and now international recognition showcases the potential of young people in the state. Prior to her international success, she had secured first place at the local government and state levels, as well as nationally, before representing Nigeria in Saudi Arabia.
The governor reaffirmed his administration's commitment to enhancing educational development for young people, particularly in Qur'anic and religious studies, which he believes are crucial for nurturing responsible citizenship and character development. He stated, "Our commitment to promoting the educational journey of young people, particularly in the realm of religious studies, remains unwavering. We recognise its role in moulding character and contributing to societal development."
In addition, Governor Yahaya acknowledged the significant role played by the Abubakar Siddiq Community Islamic School for Qur’anic Memorisation, where Maryam studied, in shaping her success. He noted that the school has been instrumental in nurturing young talents and preparing them for greater achievements.
Looking ahead, the governor expressed his eagerness to personally honor Maryam upon her return to Nigeria, highlighting that such recognition would not only encourage her to continue striving for excellence but also inspire other young people to pursue their dreams. He urged parents, teachers, and religious institutions to continue supporting and nurturing young talents to help them contribute meaningfully to society.
