DSS alerts Sokoto on potential terrorist attacks targeting tertiary institutions
The DSS has issued a warning about possible attacks on universities in Sokoto State.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a significant warning regarding potential terrorist and bandit attacks on tertiary institutions in Sokoto State. This alert, dated July 18, 2026, was communicated to the Sokoto State Government and signed by B. Abdulaziz, who represents the State Director of Security.
In the letter titled "Planned Attack on Tertiary Institutions by Terrorist and Bandit Gangs," the DSS highlighted a troubling shift in the focus of criminal groups, moving their attention from primary and secondary schools to universities and other higher education facilities. The DSS emphasized that these institutions are particularly vulnerable due to the large number of students, academic staff, and their families, which increases the risk of abductions.
The security agency warned that any attacks on these educational establishments could severely disrupt academic activities and instill fear among students and faculty. In light of this intelligence, the DSS has called for an urgent review and enhancement of security measures surrounding all tertiary institutions in the state.
To mitigate the risks, the DSS has alerted relevant security and response agencies, urging them to implement proactive measures to prevent possible attacks and ensure the safety of students, staff, and educational infrastructure. Furthermore, the agency has recommended that the Sokoto State Government take coordinated actions to bolster security around universities and other tertiary institutions.
The warning comes at a time when concerns about safety in educational environments are heightened, and it underscores the need for vigilance and preparedness in safeguarding the academic community in Sokoto State.
