Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has laid out an ambitious plan to address Nigeria's pressing security challenges and restore the fuel subsidy within his first 100 days in office, should he win the upcoming 2027 election. During a recent Hausa-language television interview, Atiku highlighted the urgent need for effective leadership to combat the ongoing insecurity that has plagued various regions of the country.

In his interview on August 19, Atiku emphasized that the current security crisis, which includes threats from Boko Haram, ISWAP, and banditry, stems from failures in leadership. He stated, "What I will do in the first 100 days in office to address insecurity is to increase the number of security personnel and equip them adequately." This statement underscores his commitment to strengthening Nigeria's security forces, which have faced significant challenges in recent years.

The former Vice President pointed out the historical context of the Boko Haram insurgency, recalling his advice to a past president to hold security chiefs accountable for their performance. He expressed concern that the current administration has not taken similar decisive actions, leading to a deterioration in the security situation across the country.

In addition to his security strategy, Atiku also addressed the contentious issue of the fuel subsidy. He criticized the removal of the subsidy, arguing that it has not led to any tangible benefits for ordinary Nigerians. Instead, he vowed to restore the subsidy, asserting that it is essential for improving the daily lives of citizens. "The policy had failed to translate into any meaningful improvement in the daily lives of Nigerians," he remarked.

Atiku's plan also includes addressing the grievances of retired military officers, who have recently protested over unpaid entitlements. He attributed the failure to settle these veterans to mismanagement and corruption within the government, promising to rectify these issues if elected.

As the 2027 elections approach, Atiku faces competition from other notable figures, including Peter Obi, who has recently transitioned to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after resigning from the Labour Party. Obi's candidacy adds another layer of complexity to the electoral landscape, with calls from some NDC officials urging Atiku to step aside in favor of Obi.

With his proposed policies, Atiku Abubakar aims to present himself as a candidate capable of restoring stability and addressing the critical issues facing Nigeria. His focus on security and economic welfare resonates with many citizens who are eager for change in the upcoming election.
