The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) regarding the management of a ₦12 billion intervention fund. This fund was allocated by the federal government in January 2024 to address long-standing unpaid bonuses owed to players across various national teams.

The investigation comes in the wake of significant scrutiny on the NFF, particularly following the disappointing performances of Nigeria's national teams. Reports indicate that players had not received their bonuses for over 15 months, leading to growing discontent among fans and stakeholders alike. The NFF, under the leadership of President Ibrahim Gusau, has faced increasing calls for resignation as the national teams have struggled in international competitions.

The Super Eagles, Nigeria's men's national team, have notably failed to qualify for the last two FIFA World Cups, while the Super Falcons, the women's team, recently had a poor showing at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, missing out on a spot at the Women’s World Cup as a result.

In light of these failures, NFF officials have reportedly been summoned to the presidential villa in Abuja, where discussions have included calls for their voluntary resignation. This development adds pressure on the Gusau-led board as they navigate a challenging period for Nigerian football.

Additionally, the National Sports Commission has decided to suspend a planned NFF election that was set for September. This postponement reflects the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the federation's leadership and the future of football administration in Nigeria. Stakeholders are increasingly questioning the direction of the NFF, particularly in light of the recent failures and the ongoing investigations.

In response to the situation, the NFF has established a fact-finding committee aimed at investigating the reasons behind the national teams' underperformance at major competitions. This six-member committee was formed after the Super Falcons' failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.

As the NFF remains tight-lipped about the investigations and the summons to the presidential villa, the future of Nigerian football administration hangs in the balance, with fans and stakeholders eagerly awaiting clarity on these pressing issues.
