The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Gombe, has provided insights into the party's disappointing performance in the recent Osun State governorship election, where their candidate, Francis Ajala, was unable to unseat the incumbent, Ademola Adeleke. Gombe spoke to journalists on Monday, highlighting that a crucial court ruling allowing Ajala to participate came just a day before the election, which significantly hampered the party's visibility and voter confidence.

Gombe noted that many voters were under the impression that Ajala would not be on the ballot, leading to a lack of support that did not reflect the party's actual strength. He stated, "What happened in Osun is not the true strength of our support. Voters thought we would not participate." This perception, he argued, resulted in the SDP's performance appearing as though they had not contested at all.

Despite the setback, Gombe emphasized that the results should not be interpreted as a lack of support for the SDP. He expressed optimism about the party's potential, suggesting that the election outcome serves as a warning to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the upcoming 2027 general elections. He remarked, "There is no small party; this is a warning signal to the ruling party."

The SDP leader called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that future elections are conducted in a manner that boosts the confidence of voters, both domestically and internationally. He urged for a replication of the judicial processes observed in Osun to enhance electoral integrity in the future.

In the election results, Adeleke emerged victorious, defeating his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the APC, further solidifying his position in the state. The Court of Appeal's ruling that cleared the way for Ajala's candidacy was a pivotal moment, as it overturned a previous Federal High Court decision that had recognized Shehu Gabam as the SDP chairman. This late development left the SDP scrambling to mobilize support in a compressed timeframe, ultimately affecting their electoral outcome.

As the political landscape evolves, Gombe's remarks reflect a broader concern about the dynamics of voter perception and party representation in Nigeria's electoral process, particularly for smaller parties like the SDP. The implications of the Osun election results will likely resonate as the nation prepares for the next general elections, with all parties reassessing their strategies and voter engagement approaches.
