In a significant move to promote peace and unity among the diverse ethnic groups in Warri, the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has inaugurated the first edition of the Warri Unity Games. This annual event will take place on the first Saturday of the week dedicated to his coronation anniversary.

During the inauguration held at the Federal Government College in Warri, the Olu expressed his vision for the games, stating that they are intended to help the community overcome historical grievances and suspicions. In a heartfelt message shared on his Facebook page, he welcomed guests, students, and stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of unity. "Our beloved people, our honoured neighbours, our distinguished guests — we welcome you, with joy in our heart, to this first edition of the Warri Unity Games," he said.

The Olu underscored the significance of the initiative, asserting that it aims to demonstrate that the community shares more commonalities than differences. He stated, "It is our hope, and indeed our firm conviction, that these Games will reveal a simple truth: that far more unites us than divides us."

Reflecting on the past, the Olu recalled a tragic episode in the history of Warri, where a planned land carnival during his father’s coronation anniversary in the early 1990s turned violent, leading to long-lasting repercussions for the community. He attributed the chaos to pride and negative energies that had plagued the area. The Olu lamented that this incident had overshadowed Warri’s status as a vibrant cultural hub, a position it held before the rise of the Calabar Carnival.

Despite the painful memories, the Olu expressed optimism for the future, stating, "This time, however, we will not sit and wait for an unfortunate reaction to a beautiful and inspirational innovation. We are taking the bull by the horns." He committed to ensuring that the coronation anniversary celebrations would henceforth focus on themes of unity, peace, progress, and prosperity.
