The recent governorship election in Osun State has been hailed for its integrity, thanks to intense political competition and technological advancements implemented by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The Athena Election Observatory, an independent initiative aimed at ensuring electoral integrity, released its preliminary assessment following the election held on August 15, 2026.

Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party emerged victorious, securing 511,067 votes against his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 444,815 votes. The observatory, established by the Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership, noted that the competitive nature of the election made it significantly harder to manipulate the results on a large scale.

In its analysis, the Athena Election Observatory highlighted that the rivalry among major political parties created logistical challenges for any potential electoral fraud. Paul Liam, the observatory's Media and Communications Officer, emphasized that organized political competition is crucial for safeguarding electoral integrity. He stated, "Where competing political parties possess capabilities at scale including agents across polling units, working knowledge of the electoral process, and the capacity to track results independently, manipulating an election becomes much harder to execute without detection."

The report also pointed to a notable increase in the electorate, with registered voters rising from 1,952,387 in the 2022 election to 2,339,544 in 2026, marking a 19.8 percent increase. The number of accredited voters also saw a rise, from 827,218 to 1,010,684, while total votes cast increased from 823,124 to 1,005,800. Despite these increases, the accreditation rate remained relatively stable, moving from 42.37 percent in 2022 to 43.20 percent in 2026.

The observatory's findings suggest that a larger and more mobilized electorate could reduce the effectiveness of retail vote buying, making it more costly for those attempting to manipulate the election. Both leading political parties improved their vote totals compared to the previous election, with Adeleke increasing his votes from 403,371 to 511,067, and the APC rising from 375,027 to 444,815. However, the margin of victory widened significantly, from 28,344 votes in 2022 to 66,252 votes in 2026.

Technological improvements played a vital role in the election's integrity. The Athena Election Observatory noted the successful deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the immediate uploading of polling-unit results to the INEC Result Viewing portal. These measures contributed to a more transparent and auditable electoral process, although the observatory identified areas for further improvement, including upload delays and the need for clearer public transmission timelines.

As the observatory prepares for a comprehensive independent post-election audit, it stresses the importance of ongoing scrutiny beyond the declaration of results. The focus will be on assessing the resilience, transparency, and accuracy of the electoral process, ensuring that the integrity of future elections is upheld.
