Human rights lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has called on the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, to take immediate action against those responsible for the recent attack and abduction of Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC). Idam described the incident as both shameful and unacceptable, emphasizing that Sowore should not have to endure such treatment due to his political views or activism.

In a statement released on Friday, Idam expressed his deep concern over the attack, highlighting the importance of civility in society. He stated that democracy relies on the ability to express dissenting opinions without fear of intimidation or violence. "The attack and abduction of Omoyele Sowore are shameful and unacceptable. He does not deserve such humiliation or treatment from anyone, regardless of how uncomfortable some people may be with his views, opinions or activism," Idam said.

Idam further warned that allowing such acts to go unpunished could lead to a breakdown of law and order, stating, "If we allow such conduct to become normal, we risk pushing our society towards anarchy, where the rule of law gives way to the rule of force, and life becomes nasty, brutish and insecure."

The lawyer urged the Inspector General to ensure that those behind the attack are swiftly identified and prosecuted. He reiterated that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands, regardless of their grievances. "Our society must grow in civility and learn to treat opposing voices with respect, restraint and lawfulness," he added.

Idam concluded his statement by asserting that everyone, including Sowore and his associates, deserves protection under the law, regardless of their opinions or convictions. He insisted that the police must act decisively to uphold justice and prevent further incidents of this nature, reinforcing the principle that no one is above the law.
