The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced that all inmates being transported to court were safely returned to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Port Harcourt following an attack on their escort vehicle. The incident took place on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, along Aba Road in the Oil Mill Market area of Rivers State.

According to the NCoS, the vehicle, which was carrying inmates and correctional personnel, encountered a traffic holdup before being attacked by unidentified individuals. In response to the assault, members of the armed escort team fired warning shots into the air to deter the attackers and protect the inmates.

Chief Superintendent of Corrections, J.N. Osuji, the Public Relations Officer for the NCoS, issued a statement on Wednesday expressing the agency's concern over the incident. The statement conveyed condolences to the family of a victim and others affected by the attack, highlighting the serious implications of such violence.

The NCoS strongly condemned the assault, emphasizing that it endangered lives and threatened public safety. The agency stated, "The service strongly condemns the attack on the vehicles conveying inmates and personnel on legitimate national assignment." This incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of correctional operations and the need for respect towards law enforcement activities.

In light of the attack, the NCoS urged the public to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions in the community. They also reassured citizens of their commitment to maintaining security and the safe custody of inmates.

The NCoS has pledged to cooperate fully with relevant security authorities as investigations into the incident are underway. They aim to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and hold those responsible accountable under the law. Osuji stated, "The Service will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the matter is addressed through due process."

As the investigation progresses, the NCoS has appealed to residents to remain calm and allow the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry into the events that transpired. The agency remains focused on ensuring the safety of its personnel and the public while fulfilling its statutory responsibilities.
