A devastating accident in Minna, Niger State, has resulted in the deaths of four students from the Federal University of Technology and the driver of a government vehicle. The incident occurred on Monday, October 26, 2026, when a car in Governor Mohammed Bago's convoy collided head-on with a vehicle carrying the students.

The crash took place in the Gidan Kwanu area of Minna as the convoy was returning from a condolence visit to a traditional ruler. Eyewitnesses reported that the convoy was traveling at high speed when the collision occurred, leading to a tragic outcome. Four of the five students in the car died at the scene, while the driver of the government vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, also lost his life. The fifth student and Dauda Chikuba, the Director-General of the Government House, survived the crash but were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Niger State Police confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident. Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, indicated that the investigation is ongoing, although he did not disclose the names of the deceased.

The convoy was reportedly returning from paying respects to Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, following the recent death of Hajia Aisha, the Sagi Nupe. Eyewitness accounts described the collision as a head-on crash, with one observer noting, "It was a terrible accident."

The remains of the deceased students and the driver were evacuated from the scene, but their final destination has not been made public. The community has expressed shock and grief over the loss of young lives in this tragic incident, highlighting the need for greater road safety measures, especially involving government convoys.

As the investigation continues, the families of the victims are left to mourn their loss, and calls for accountability in the wake of this tragedy are growing louder. The Niger State government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, but the public is awaiting further information on the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking accident.
