The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed that six individuals were killed during an armed attack on the Gero community in Jos South Local Government Area. The incident occurred in the early hours of October 27, 2026, when unidentified gunmen invaded the area and opened fire on residents.

According to a statement from the police, the attack began around 10:20 PM, leading to chaos as residents attempted to flee for safety. Eyewitness accounts indicate that some victims were shot while inside their shops, while others were targeted at a local restaurant where food was being prepared. Initial reports had suggested that seven people had lost their lives, but the police later confirmed the death toll at six.

Community member Bot Silas recounted the terrifying events, stating, "The gunmen stormed the community at about 10:20 PM and started shooting sporadically. The attack caused serious panic among residents."

In response to the attack, the police mobilized a team of mobile policemen and tactical units, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, to the scene. The police, in collaboration with military personnel, managed to dislodge the attackers, who subsequently fled into the nearby hillside forest. The police have since commenced operations to search the area, which included bush-combing and cordon-and-search activities.

During these operations, some motorcycles and other items believed to be linked to the assailants were recovered. The police have intensified their investigation to apprehend those responsible for the attack. One individual who was injured during the incident has been taken to the hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been moved to the morgue.

Rwang Tengwong, a spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, condemned the attack, calling it "unacceptable" and urging security agencies to take swift action. He stated, "The killing of innocent people in Gero is condemnable and must not be allowed to continue. We call on the relevant security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure that residents can live without fear."

In a show of commitment to community safety, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, visited Gero on Monday for an on-the-spot assessment. During his visit, he met with community leaders and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the police and local residents to enhance security and improve intelligence gathering. He encouraged the community to remain vigilant and security-conscious, expressing condolences on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for the tragic loss of life.

The Plateau State Police Command has assured the community of its dedication to bringing the attackers to justice and restoring peace in the area.
