The tragic killing of Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, a prominent Islamic cleric in Katsina State, has sent shockwaves through the local community. The cleric was shot dead by gunmen in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area on the evening of October 26, 2026, shortly after leaving his home to teach his students.

Hajiya Fatima Masussuka, the cleric's wife, recounted the harrowing incident, stating that she had accompanied her husband outside their residence when he realized he had forgotten his bag. After returning inside, she heard gunshots and rushed out to find her husband fatally injured. "I felt very bad. He was indeed a caring husband," she expressed, highlighting their shared life and their daughter together.

The attack has been attributed to the Ansaru terrorist group, which claimed responsibility through an audio message, accusing Sheikh Masussuka of being an infidel. However, the Katsina State Police Command has yet to verify this claim. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the truth behind the attack.

In a statement, the police confirmed the deaths of Sheikh Masussuka and his friend, Adamu Abubakar, who was also shot during the attack. The police have deployed tactical teams to the area to track down the assailants, who fled the scene on a motorcycle.

President Bola Tinubu has condemned the killings, labeling them as heinous acts that threaten the sanctity of human life. He has directed the Nigeria Police Force to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible and ensure justice is served. Tinubu extended his condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Katsina State.

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Radda, also expressed his sorrow over the incident, describing Sheikh Masussuka as a strong advocate for peace and interfaith harmony. Radda assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted, urging security agencies to work diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice. He appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities during the investigation.

The late cleric, known as the "Peace Ambassador," had previously faced scrutiny over his sermons, which some claimed deviated from traditional Islamic teachings. His teachings, however, focused on promoting peaceful coexistence among various faiths. The Katsina State Government had engaged in discussions regarding his sermons following complaints from some community members.

The attack on Sheikh Masussuka is part of a disturbing trend of violence targeting religious leaders in Nigeria, prompting former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso to voice his concerns. He condemned the increasing violence against religious scholars, emphasizing their crucial role in promoting moral values and community development. Kwankwaso called for urgent action to restore security and protect citizens from such senseless acts of violence.

As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of a respected leader whose teachings aimed to foster peace and understanding among diverse groups in society.
