The terrorist organization Jama'atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan, commonly known as Ansaru, has claimed responsibility for the assassination of Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, a well-known Islamic cleric in Katsina State. The cleric was shot dead on Monday night alongside another individual, Adamu Abubakar, outside his residence in Dutsin-Ma.

According to the Katsina State Police Command, the attack occurred around 7:30 p.m. when two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on the victims before fleeing the scene. Both men were rushed to a nearby hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Sheikh Masussuka was recognized for his Quran-centered teachings and his advocacy for interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence among different religious communities in Nigeria. He was also vocal against violent extremism and radical ideologies.

In a four-minute video released by Ansaru and translated by Premium Times, the group stated that the cleric was targeted due to his promotion of peaceful coexistence and his refusal to engage in a debate, known as mukabala, that was proposed by other clerics. The group accused Masussuka of being an "arnai" (infidel) and claimed that he was undermining Islam and misleading Muslims.

Ansaru expressed satisfaction in announcing the cleric's death, asserting that it was carried out by what they referred to as "soldiers among soldiers of Allah." The group further warned other individuals they label as infidels, urging them to repent or face similar consequences.

This incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by extremist groups in Nigeria, particularly in regions where interfaith dialogue is crucial for maintaining peace. Sheikh Masussuka's murder reflects the dangerous intersection of religious extremism and violence in the country, raising concerns over the safety of religious leaders who advocate for unity and understanding among diverse faiths.
